Nathalie Atkinson: Fashionable and political, dreadlocks are anything but a hairstyle of neglect - The Globe and Mail

A tutorial in this month’s issue of Allure magazine instructs readers on how to achieve the “loose Afro,” modelled by a straight-haired white woman (actress Marissa Neitling), with no reference to the rich history of the style to defuse claims of racial insensitivity and appropriation. Clueless, or clickbait? The Afro, like dreadlocks, comes loaded, but especially so in this case, since the overall effect of the coif’s quivering, frizzy curls is, uncannily, à la Rachel Dolezal. The timing couldn’t be weirder, following a summer of heated discussions about racial identity prompted by the now-disgraced former African-studies professor and NAACP chapter president who was accused of...

How NOT to choose a hairstyle...

I have pretty hideous hair. Naturally curly and humidity hating with baby hair regrowth that sticks out like wings and threatens to stay forever even though my youngest is nearly two. And whilst you will never catch me complaining about the hot weather, it’s making my bad hair days even worse. Monica has nothing on me. Nothing. I spend the best part of three days a year straightening it. Three whole days. And that’s only to make it marginally less kinky… frizzy… quiffy. It’s a complete waste of my time. I mean, I could be tweeting or blogging instead. So I am thinking about getting it cut. Short. OK, let me quantify that. Not a crop. It’s...

The men’s buzz cut - a hairstyle David Beckham will always be known for

Allow us to take you back in time to 19th century Serbia, of all places. It was here in a barbershop owned by Nikola Bizumic that buzzcut was born. Why? Well, Mr Bizumic invented hair clippers, which meant for the first time hair could be cut very close to the scalp, and fast. Clippers were soon adopted by barbers around the world. And so it was that the buzz cut - one of men’s hairstyle du jour - was born, though the term first came about in the United States military. New recruits were given a close cut to prevent lice taking hold, and to keep soldiers cool in high temperatures or on marches. By the 1970s however, it was a style declaration. For punks, a shaved head became a sign of...

Braids, so much more than a hairstyle - The Original Mane n Tail, Personal Care

Braids, so much more than a hairstyle I love braids. I love how easy it can be to style your hair using a simple braid. I love how versatile a braid can be – a loose braid and a sundress creates a very different look compared to an angled french braid and a cocktail dress. I love how you can braid your hair whether it’s wet or dry. I love how you can easily braid your hair in a pinch, like when you’re unexpectedly offered a ride in a convertible. Or when you get caught in a rain storm – two quick braids down the sides and you no longer look like a drowned rat. I love how braiding your hair can be an art form, not just a hairstyle. And I’m not alone. Braids are...

A Hairstyle by any Name …

The hair if folded under to achieve this shape. The style is similar but not identical to the French twist. Hair Beauty expert advice - Finding a Hairstyle to Suit your Face Shape

Finding a decent hairstyle that doesn’t go out of fashion before the day’s out is tricky enough without having to consider how other external factors could potentially mess the whole deal up. In particular, before going for a new hairstyle or haircut, it’s best to know your face shape and get some knowledge from the experts on what styles will work best for you. First (and we’re aware that this is a little unorthodox, but it’s necessary), measure your face: gauge the width of your facial features – you forehead, brow, cheekbones, jawline - in relation to one another, and the length of your face too. Once you have done this, you can access information,...
